About Shin Splints
Shin splints are experienced as a pain along the front or inside of the lower leg, usually described as a dull achy or burning pain, the shins can also feel tender to touch.
The correct medical term for shin splints is medial tibial stress syndrome. They can be painful, but aren’t serious. The symptoms come from inflammation in the connective tissues that join the muscle to the bone. It’s often triggered by repetitive stress from activities like running, but the cause comes from underlying mechanical issues such as muscular tightness, joint stiffness or muscle weakness in the core, buttocks, legs and feet.
Shin splints generally respond very well to treatment, and with the right advice, can be prevented from reoccurring.
